Taranaki is one of those places that never stops inspiring me. From rugged coastlines to misty forests and iconic mountain views, there’s no shortage of incredible locations to photograph. Whether I’m shooting landscapes, portraits, or creative projects, these spots always deliver something special.
Here are some of my favourite places in Taranaki to capture powerful, memorable images.
📍 Mount Taranaki (Maunga Taranaki)
You can’t talk about photography in Taranaki without starting here.
On a clear day, Maunga Taranaki dominates the skyline — perfectly symmetrical and endlessly photogenic. Sunrise and sunset are my favourite times to shoot, when the light wraps around the mountain and creates soft shadows and warm tones.
From snow-covered winter peaks to summer greenery, it’s never the same twice.
🌿 Pukekura Park
Right in the heart of New Plymouth, Pukekura Park is a photographer’s playground.
With lakes, bridges, bush tracks, and gardens, it’s ideal for:
Portraits
Family sessions
Engagement shoots
Creative projects
Every season brings something new, and the variety means you can get multiple looks in one session.
🚶♂️ New Plymouth Coastal Walkway
The Coastal Walkway is one of the most versatile photography locations in Taranaki.
Stretching along the coastline, it offers a mix of ocean views, black sand beaches, modern architecture, and open spaces. It’s ideal for:
Lifestyle and branding shoots
Couples and family sessions
Sport and fitness photography
Sunset portraits
With Mount Taranaki often visible on clear days and the Tasman Sea on the other side, this location gives you incredible variety in a single shoot.
Golden hour here is hard to beat.
🌉 Rewarewa Bridge
Rewarewa Bridge is one of Taranaki’s most iconic hidden gems.
Surrounded by bush and farmland, this historic suspension bridge creates a timeless, cinematic backdrop. It’s perfect for:
Portrait sessions
Engagement shoots
Creative storytelling images
Atmospheric black-and-white photos
The textures, structure, and natural surroundings give photos here a unique character you won’t find anywhere else in the region.
It’s a favourite spot when I want something that clasicly ilistrates New Plymouth.
🌊 Three Sisters and Elephant Rock
This spot on the coastline near Tongaporutu is raw, dramatic, and unforgettable.
The towering rock formations, black sand, and crashing waves create epic backdrops — especially at low tide and golden hour. It’s perfect for moody landscapes and adventurous portrait shoots.
Just be sure to check tide times before heading out.
🏞️ Lake Mangamahoe
Lake Mangamahoe is one of my go-to spots for peaceful, reflective images.
On calm mornings, the mountain reflects beautifully in the water. The surrounding bush and walking tracks also make it great for lifestyle and branding shoots that feel natural and relaxed.
It’s especially stunning in soft, overcast light.
🪨 Paritutu Rock
If you’re up for a bit of a climb, Paritutu Rock rewards you with one of the best views in the region.
From the top, you get sweeping views of the coastline, port, and mountain. It’s a fantastic location for wide-angle landscape shots and dramatic silhouettes at sunset.
🏕️ Pouakai Tarn
For those willing to hike, Pouakai Tarn is pure magic.
Famous for its mirror-like reflection of Mount Taranaki, this spot is best visited at sunrise on calm days. When the conditions are right, it produces some of the most iconic images in the country.
It’s a favourite for serious landscape photographers — and for good reason.
Why Taranaki Is So Special to Photograph
What makes Taranaki unique isn’t just the locations — it’s how close everything is.
In one day, you can shoot:
Mountain landscapes
Coastal scenes
Forest trails
Urban parks
Farmland views
That variety gives me endless creative freedom and keeps every shoot fresh.
More Than Just Locations
Great photos aren’t only about where you are — they’re about timing, light, and perspective.
Knowing when the fog will roll in, when the sun hits the coast, or when the mountain clears makes all the difference. After years of shooting here, I’ve learned how to work with Taranaki’s changing moods to get the best results.
Final Thoughts
Taranaki is home, and photographing it is something I’m genuinely proud of. Every shoot reminds me how lucky we are to live in a place with so much natural beauty packed into such a small area.
Whether it’s a commercial project, personal shoot, or creative session, these locations never disappoint — and I’m always keen to find new angles and hidden gems.
If you’re thinking about a shoot in Taranaki, I’d love to help you make the most of it.
